Netflix Will Test Charging Users for Sharing Subscriptions Outside of Their Households

Netflix is making an effort to curb password sharing with new features being launched and tested in parts of Central and South America.

On Wednesday, the company announced on its site that it has “been working on ways to enable members who share [their Netflix accounts] outside their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a bit more.”

Under the heading “Paying to Share Netflix Outside Your Household,” the release stated that “features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans” have “created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared.”

“As a result, accounts are being shared between households — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

Netflix Raises Monthly Subscription Prices for Users Across North America

The announcement, authored by Netflix’s director of product innovation Chengyi Long, confirmed that the company is launching and testing new features geared toward curbing password sharing, in which subscribers will be able to “add sub accounts for up to two people they don’t live with” for an added price.

The other feature will allow subscribers to transfer profile information, such as viewing history and personalized recommendations, into either a new account or an “Extra Member sub account.”

The features will start in three countries — Chile, Costa Rica and Peru — but the announcement maintained that “we’ll be working to understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world.”

New HDC Logistics storage depot in Aberdeen, UK.

British company HDC Logistics opens a new state of the art storage depot in Aberdeen Scotland, in order to serve mostly, the oil industry from the North Sea, supply chain management and vehicle transportation, this allowing HDC to be an important cargo hub in the northern UK.

The new depot offer supply chain, vehicle transport, escrow services, heavy logistics and short and medium time storage for merchandise, parcels, equipment and vehicle.

The depot will be fully operational by the end of may 2018, offering 25 new jobs for the Aberdeen area.

“Consumers are just buying more stuff than ever and our infrastructure, frankly, isn’t ready for it. It’s getting held back by dilapidated port infrastructure, by congestion, non-automated ports, and bad rail connections to the ports. We’re just recognizing the pain of 20 years of not investing in our infrastructure. And we’re feeling all that pain in one year right now. It’s increasingly difficult for truckers to pick up or drop off containers at ports and warehouses, leading to today’s congested ports, lots, and railyards. So boats can’t get in, we don’t have enough containers, a lot of the empty containers are stuck on the chassis, we don’t have enough chassis because we don’t have enough warehouse space, and we don’t have any space in the warehouses because we can’t move the goods out fast enough.

Also a new line of car transport trailers will be added to the fleet in order to serve vehicle transportation in this region of the country.

“Until we can focus on what actually clears the ports, rail yards and warehouses, and goods can begin to move at a pace that aligns more closely with the growth in consumer demand, there’s nowhere for the containers to go, and the number of ships waiting to unload will continue to grow. This new storage depot will offer HDC Logistics a complete advantage in the area offering our customers the best of services.” said HDC Logistics UK Manager Andrea Modelini.

“Liberty Nation” in Canada accesses $1.2M from once-frozen viral fundraiser

GoFundMe has distributed CA$1 million (US$783,315) to a trucker convoy in Canada protesting COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Funds for the “Freedom Rally” or “Freedom Convoy” viral campaign — which has raised more than CA$7.3 million — were frozen Tuesday after GoFundMe said it needed to see a plan for how the funds would be disbursed.

Tamara Lich, who set up the Freedom Convoy 2022 campaign on GoFundMe, said funds will be used to reimburse Canadians for gas and food expenses incurred while participating in a rally set to take place in Ottawa, the nation’s capital, on Saturday.

“We have some great news to share with all of you. We have received confirmation that GoFundMe has released our first batch of funds and is initiating our first transfer,” Lich tweeted Friday. “These funds will first assist drivers of all semi trucks and direct support vehicles such as, pilot trucks and/or mechanic trucks in the convoys to Ottawa.”

In a statement to media, GoFundMe said the Freedom Convoy organizers had provided a distribution plan for the funds.

“The trust and safety of our global community is our top priority. That is why we’re following our standard verification process and working directly with the campaign organizer to ensure the funds are distributed as stated by the organizer and in compliance with the law and our terms of service,” the company said in an email to the media. “Our goal is to protect the generosity of donors and ensure that all donations go to those intended.”

Freedom Convoy 2022 has collected over 90,000 donations since its launch on Jan. 14. The protest convoys emerged in response to COVID-19 vaccination requirements imposed by the U.S. and Canadian governments for cross-border truckers and other essential workers.

    UPS celebrates Global Volunteer Month

Earlier this month, international shipping provider UPS announced its continued support of Global Volunteer Month, calling on its employees to reach out to UPS community relations managers and its business resource groups to give their time to local volunteer and charity efforts.

The initiative started as a weeklong celebration of volunteerism by the Nixon administration in 1974 and was extended into Global Volunteer Month in 1991 when President George H.W. Bush launched his 1000 Points of Light campaign.

According to Points of Light, 87% of people would like to make time for volunteer opportunities, 44% of people are unsure of how or where to volunteer.

To make volunteerism easy for its U.S. employees, UPS recently released its Community Connections platform for employees to search for available volunteer opportunities.

UPS expects to expand its platform globally later this year to help reach its commitment of 30 million volunteer hours by 2030.

UPS also highlighted four employees, or “Super UPSers”  who have impacted their local communities with their volunteer efforts.

One of those individuals is Toy Ann McCray, who has carried on a family legacy of giving back to her local community.

“You cannot come in contact with Toy Ann McCray and not leave with something. However young you are, whatever lesson she taught you, you are going to take them [with you],” said a volunteer in a UPS video highlighting McCray’s activism.

McCray was a UPS community service award winner in 2020 and has also received a Daily Points of Light award for her civic work.
